Powering Opportunity
2018 Summary

Innovation belongs to all of us. Yet, according to The World Bank, more than half of global citizens are not included in the digital economy. SAP Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is tackling this issue head-on, powering opportunity for all people through digital inclusion initiatives. We address issues of access, adoption, and the application of twenty-first century skills to ensure everyone can participate in — and benefit from — today's digital world.
CSR FOCUSES ON THREE STRATEGIC PROGRAM PILLARS: building digital skills, accelerating best-run non-profits and social enterprises, and connecting employees with purpose. The first pillar focuses on what we do, while the second and third focus on how we do it. The programs within each pillar embrace the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing primarily on three of the seventeen goals: quality education (SDG 4), decent work and economic growth (SDG 8), and strengthening partnership for sustainable development (SDG 17).

In 2018, SAP donated €22.6 million to education and workforce development programs, as well as youth entrepreneurship projects. These digital skills programs took place in more than 93 countries, accelerating SAP’s ability to build and reach a diverse, skilled workforce. 55% of all employee volunteer hours were skills-based in support of these education, workforce readiness, and youth entrepreneurship programs. SAP reemphasized its commitment to social innovation and multi-stakeholder partnership through new strategic partnerships with We Are Family Foundation and Social Enterprise World Forum  (SEWF). Altogether, our employee volunteer programs and social partnerships positively impacted more than 4.2 million lives in 2018.

Together with select partners, SAP provides introductory coding workshops for children to instill a passion for innovation early-on and spark curiosity for future career paths in technology. SAP also holds basic to advanced digital skills boot camps for youth and young adults to increase their employability and secure concrete employment opportunities.

In 2018, digital skills and coding programs trained 34,000 teachers, engaged 2.8 million young people and spanned 93 countries.
